Dorothea Lange quote

Posted 7 November, 2007 in Artmaking

To know ahead of time what you’re looking for means you’re then only photographing your own preconceptions, which is very limiting.

Dorothea Lange (via Blurry Thinking)

What a fabulous quote…!

when i was in college i took a course called “the artistic imagination”. one of the key ideas was that if you planned something out completely or created something that was in your head already, you weren’t an artist but an illustrator. i don’t really buy the idea that an illustrator is not an artist, but there is a point there about taking chances and the creative process.

Nicolai Morrisson

Interesting! I agree about illustration being art, but the fundamental point that they’re different processes calls for some some thought.
