The BBC’s six-part television series, The Genius of Photography<\/em><\/a>, premiers tonight (Thursday, 25 October, 2007) on BBC Four at 9pm GMT.<\/p>\n

Tonight’s programme is Fixing the Shadows:<\/em><\/p>\n

\nPhotography first came to life in Venice where Abe Morell<\/a> used bin-liners and masking tape to turn a room into a camera—but the images created were transitory.<\/p>\n
Henry Fox Talbot<\/a> and Louis Daguerre<\/a> discovered how to ‘fix the shadows’ to produce permanent images and at that moment photography was born.<\/p>\n
Fixing the Shadows follows the birth of photography through to the age of mass photography triggered by the creation of Kodak by George Eastman.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
