Within Memory: Aspects of New Zealand documentary photography 1960–2000

From photographic projects such as Chris Matthew’s ‘Citizens of Napier’ and Anne Noble’s ‘Hidden Lives – the work of care’ to Peter Sharpe’s photographic record of stockcar racing in the 1970s to photographs taken by a New Zealand soldier serving in East Timor in 2001, ‘Within Memory’ shows photography contributing to a sense of the world we live in and the events we have shared.

Verbatim … revelation to oblivion: Photographs of words and books as seen by New Zealand artists

A particularly apt exhibition for the National Library Gallery, ‘Verbatim’ brings together an engaging selection of works by New Zealand artists who have taken words and books as their inspiration.

In association with these exhibitions, the National Library Gallery proudly presents a series of free lunchtime talks:

A librarian looks at photographs – John Sullivan, curator, Photographic Archive, Alexander Turnbull Library, Thursday 15 June, Gallery, 12.10pm

With the participants in mind: collaborative documentary projects and practices

Professor Anne Noble, Massey University School of Fine Arts, Thursday 6 July, Gallery, 12.10pm

FILE Magazine toy camera photography contest

FILE Magazine, an excellent online "magazine of unexpected photography", are holding a toy camera photography contest!

The Toy Camera Contest celebrates—you guessed it—Toy Cameras, the cheap and cheesy little cameras with low end specs and intriguing results. We encourage all amateur and professional photographers to enter this contest, and you may enter as often as you wish. Entries are accepted from April 24, 2006 until June 15, 2006 at midnight, Pacific Standard Time. And like any proper contest, there are rules, judges, and prizes.

How to Submit: Use the Submission form (select "Toy Camera" in the Project drop-down list and enter the camera type with the Title) to upload a file, or use the Feedback form to send a URL that directly links to your image(s).

Read guidelines and submit work at filemagazine.com

Reminder: last week to submit to JPG magazine issue 6: Oops!

Sometimes the best shots are accidents. They come from the moment your finger slips, your settings are wrong, you shoot into the sun, or your model sneezes. The results are more about serendipity than technique, and they can surprise even the most accomplished photographer.

The theme for Issue 6 is "Oops!" to celebrate these happy accidents. We’re seeking submissions of photos that say “Oops!” to you. Maybe it’s a photo you didn’t mean to take, or a moment you didn’t expect to capture. You’re encouraged to have fun with the theme. Surprise us!

Got the perfect "Oops!" photo? Submit it now! Submissions open until April 30, 2006.
